What is so astounding about this print?
Who made it and when?
David, does this relate somehow to focus emerging in your own work?
its an untitled landscape by hokusai. the same guy who did 'the great wave' and '36 views of fuji'. i dont have a date, however the artist lived between 1760-1849.
the layout of the print is what is astounding to me. the negative space at the top, sides, and especially bottom. the simplicity. the wispy clouds. the shade of gray. the bar in between the two halves is without a doubt the thing that sealed it for me.
words escape me. im in no way exagerating when i say no piece of artwork has ever hit me like this. warhol's red white and blue race riots are a close second.
about my own work, the only way i could see it emerging is in the negative space of my prints. hokusai uses it so well in this piece. if i could emulate that even in the slightest, i think it would be a good thing.
i hope i dont sound as lame as i think i do.
