Posted by: David Siciliano at November 9, 2004 05:50 PMi'm not getting it either...
did anyone see the bit on PBS last night? it was all about modern ad campaigns and breaking into the human psyche to know what we want even though we don't know... so somehow this ad is a product of that attempt to understand desires we have but are unaware of.
graham
i did see that frontline special last night
and thought that it was pretty interesting and scary
this image is a reference to a judas priest album
In my psychology class we've been talking about the supposed hidden/subliminal messages in today's ad campaigns and in the media. I saw this as a reference to the Judas Priest trial in 1990 when they were sued for "causing" the subsequent suicides of two teenagers who heard a message in their album when it was played backwards saying "do it". Maybe I'm way off...
Posted by: Diane at November 10, 2004 08:53 PMDiane, I think you're right. The Absolut ad people are having a joke on the whole subliminal thing.
A while ago, an advertising friend and I decided that the Absolut ads are the most successful print ad campaign ever, because they've infiltrated your experience of other ads. You can't see a liquor ad featuring a single upright bottle without being reminded of Absolut, and all liquor ads look like that now because the Absolut ads were so successful. It's another kind of subliminal message.
The similarly successful ad campaign on TV was the Energizer Bunny.
