i am really interested in the way a sketchbook page changes once it has been documented, rarified, photographed
i am thinking too about the crumpled peanuts drawings by charles schulz included in the newest mcsweeny's
in some way the aura is present post mechanical reproduction, contrary to benjamin's thinking
Posted by: adam at July 3, 2004 02:27 PMIf anything, the aura is heightened, isn't it? Rarified, documented... making the thing important. Those Schulz drawings are clearly pulled out the garbage can and photographed and through that process seem to really capture the human essence of their making.. and destruction.
In light of Dieter Roth's work as seen in these series of postings (and I can do more), I agree that there is potential in not overlooking the autobiographical nature of what we do on a daily basis. The workbook proposal addresses this to an extent since, if being used for something like a foundation studio course, it would need to communicate to students/artists who may have no expererience and/or a limited conception of what making art is about. Recognizing everyone's experience, background, daily existence as being filled with unique potential is important. The trick is too SEE it and use it... to learn to translate it into a form that can be read and considered by others.
