workshop?

hey i know there was some talk about this collaborative workshop before -

but I don't really understand what it is.

when you see it in print on the card it sure looks weird to see it next to the numbers "9/11."

that's not exactly a public gesture I'm excited about tying myself to on a card- the decision to have a "collaborative workshop" on the anniversary of an event that still carries HUGE implications for our nations' political condition. it sounds kind of....inward-looking.

i hear massmoca is hosting a panel on that day in connection with their "interventionists" show.

So what can we do about the date?
What is the "interventionist" show? Is this massmoca's discussion about THE 9/11?

I too would like to get a take on the workshop from Adam... what has been proposed? What do you mean, "inward-looking"? What might be a good thing to do?

kevin
the collaborative workshop just happens to be on that day
mostly because uica scheduled it then so that participating artists from out of town would be there
i understand your discomfort, but there is no connection to the attacks
so i'm not really sure what to do about this
we could leave it off the card, i suppose, but i think that the workshop is really an important aspect of this show
as far as what the workshop is, specifically,
it's not totally figured out yet
i had been talking to john rich at uica at mentioned that possible topics might be:
portraits
making buildings
making trees
blind drawing
telephone conversations

as i look back over this list,
making buildings strikes me as a topic related to 9/11 specifically, as an activity of healing perhaps
not really my interest

so what should we do
the workshop, however it happens, is a way to connect all of us as artists and as a community with the gr community
to do what i think art should do- establish relationships through conversation

The matter -of-factness of everything is something integral to this show, too, as I see it. Gore and violence interspersed with whatever and the dog pooping... Alan's imagery culled from other cultures and religions mingled with our own in an attempt to find common ground and understand differences seems quite relevant and bolstering to a discussion on that day as well. I don't think we need to shy away from recognising it even though our main goal may not be to run a panel discussion about the anniversary in order to help people grieve.
If anything, I feel a public workshop would be a positive thing and as Adam described the purpose of doing this work to begin with.
As for being "inward looking", I don't see it that way. As a group event, we are not hiding in our rooms mulling it over. I do think we should start coming up with some ideas about what will happen on that day.

i don't have a problem with the workshop on 9/11, but i am not really sure how the workshop itself fits into the big picture.

maybe its because i have been reading about the book, but it seems that collaboration and collage could play a central role in this workshop atmosphere. would it be possible to generate imagery from the blog for this? i'm sure that this would be expensive, but it would be interesting to see the images and text on the blog printed "oversized" and made available for collage.

some kind of project that would allow the public to interact with all our "materials" and generate work offline. functioning somewhat like the "textbook" in an effort to highlight that product and the process.

thoughts?
